  • My family is need of a wish. You see we have a major situation on our hands. My brother-in-law went to the Philippines to visit his girlfriend. While over there he became sick. He suffered from a stroke and heart attack, among of things. He was fighting for his life for about 3 weeks. He was on and off life support several times. Finally he suffered from another stroke, went into a come and never woke up. The Philippine doctors confirmed him dead. After I confirmed to my mother-in-law of his deaf. She had a nervous break down. She still is currently in the hospital. The United States Embassy has emailed the family and told us that before we can bring my brother-in-law home to bury him, we have to pay $9,700.00 in medical bills. You see it is a Philippine custom that any and all medical bills must be paid in full before the hospital releases his body and death certificate. The US Embassy also stated to us that we also would need $8,000.00. in funds to be able to fly his body back home as well. My family needs help on this matter. We do not have the
funds to do so. We so desperate to get him home and have a proper memorial service for him. But we just dont have the funds to do so. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I am here in PH & medical bills are usually charged upon admission & along the way. The body of a US citizen is likely to become custody of the US State Department who coordinates with the family. There would also be an official report of death abroad. @ comment below the girlfriend has no legal say at all. I would try to verify via https://www.facebook.com/manila.usembassy or http://manila.usembassy.gov/wwwha017.html#Inexpensive ACS Manila should have a point of contact handling the case. Cremation is recommended due to the expense of body transfer to the US.
